Dance Classes
Weekly Fall Classes: September 9-January 5
Weekly Winter Classes: January 6-May 2
Students work on technique in each style along with learning choreography to perform at our Recitals. Fall classes will perform at the Winter Recital on January 5, 2025 and Winter Classes will perform at the Spring Recital on May 4, 2025. Both Winter and Spring recitals are held at the YHS Auditorium. New choreography is taught for each recital.
- Ballet: students gain overall body awareness and build technique as the foundation of all dance styles.
- Lyrical/Jazz: students explore movement which has a feeling and tells a story.
- Pom: students learn the proper pom motion technique along with strength of movement and counting to music.
- Hip Hop: students learn how to feel rhythms and grooves to upbeat and strong music.
- Acro/Skills: students progress in acrobatic dance skills along with turns, leaps and jumps.
- Pre-Pointe: students build a foundation for pointe dance and is required for students wanting to progress to Pointe.
- Pointe: students build pointe dance skills, technique and strength.
- Musical Theatre: students learn to combine acting skills with dance technique to perform dances that tell a story.
- Tap: students learn rhythm and coordination while learning tap dance technique along with increased musicality.
- Kinderdance: students explore moving their body to music and across the dance floor. Kinderdance is a fun way to introduce young children to the art of dance!
Competition Program
Teams
Members of teams are determined by their birth year and tryout score. Team divisions are set by USASF which is the organization we compete under. PDC teams compete in Pom, Lyrical and Hip Hop in the Mini, Youth and Senior divisions.
Mini - 2014, 2015, 2016
Youth - 2011, 2012, 2013
Senior - 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010
Solos, Duets & Trios
All dancers who try out for the Mini, Youth and Senior teams are eligible to try out for a solo, duet or trio. Dancers must be on at least one team routine in order to compete a solo, duet or trio.
Practices
Teams practice 2 times per week in the summer June 10-August 15. September-December teams practice 1-2 times per week. January-April teams practice 2-3 times per week (Senior teams will have additional practices before Worlds). Solos, duets and trios have required weekly practices.
Classes
All competition dancers are required to take the following classes:
Fall (September-December) - 3 classes: Ballet, plus two elective classes of choice
Winter (January-May) - 1 class: Ballet
It is highly recommended to take additional classes!
Competitions
Teams will compete January-April. Here is a tentative schedule of competitions:
January 24-26 DX AmeriCup, Minneapolis: Mini, Youth, Senior
February 1 Dakota Valley, North Sioux City: Mini, Youth, Senior
February 8 Valentines Classic, Sioux Falls: Mini, Youth, Senior
February 15-16 WSA, Sioux Falls: Mini, Youth, Senior
March 14-16 CSG, Schaumburg IL: Senior
March 30 Rumble in the Jungle, Brookings: Mini, Youth
April 24-28 The Dance Worlds, Orlando: Seniors
Optional Competitions for Solos, Duets and Trios will be available and announced when 2025 dates are released. These are for dancers who would like to compete their solo, duet, trio at additional competitions. All solo, duet, trio routines are required to compete at all team competitions, but may compete at additional optional competitions.
Worlds Bids
The Senior team routines will attend 3 Worlds Bid events; DX, WSA & CSG. These competitions will award World’s bids to attend The Dance Worlds. It is the goal for the Senior team to earn a bid in all 3 routines and attend The Dance Worlds.
